GhaNaijaBuzz (“we”, “us”, “our”) is a news and media website covering Ghana, Nigeria and the wider West African community. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you visit ghanaijabuzz.com (the “Site”), how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. By using the Site you agree to this policy.
1. Who we are
The Site is operated by ThinkApples Network Ltd, a company registered in Nigeria with its office in Lagos. For anything about your personal information, email us at info@ghanaijabuzz.com.
2. Information we collect
Information you give us.
- Comments. If you comment on a story, we receive the name, email address and website (if any) you enter, the comment itself, and your IP address.
- Messages and submissions. If you email us, send a news tip or submit content, we keep what you send and your contact details so we can reply.
- Push notifications. If you choose to allow alerts, our notification provider stores an identifier for your browser or device.
Information collected automatically. When you visit, our servers and our partners receive technical information such as your IP address, browser and device type, operating system, language, the pages you view, the page that referred you, the date and time, and your approximate location (country or city) worked out from your IP address.
Reactions. When you tap a reaction (such as Fire or Shocked) under a story, we add it to an anonymous count for that story. We do not link reactions to your name. We use your IP address only briefly, in a scrambled (hashed) form, to stop automated abuse for about 10 minutes. The reaction you chose is remembered only inside your own browser.
We do not ask you to create an account to read the Site, and we do not knowingly collect sensitive personal information.
3. How we use information
- To run, secure and improve the Site, including fixing errors and preventing spam and abuse.
- To understand which stories and features readers value, so we can publish better content.
- To show advertising that helps pay for free journalism (see section 6).
- To send push notifications you have asked for.
- To reply to your messages and publish comments you submit.
- To meet our legal obligations and protect our rights.
Where the law requires a legal basis (for example for readers in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom), we rely on your consent (cookies, push notifications, personalised ads), our legitimate interests (running and securing the Site, measuring audience, keeping it free) and legal obligations.
4. Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small files stored on your device. We and our partners also use similar technologies such as local storage and tags. They are used for:
- Essential functions, such as remembering your light or dark mode, your text size and your reactions, and keeping the Site secure.
- Performance and analytics, to see how the Site is used.
- Advertising, to deliver and measure ads.
- Offline use. If you install the Site as an app on your phone, your device keeps a saved copy of some pages so they open faster.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Some parts of the Site may not work as well if you do. Where required by law, we ask for your consent before using non-essential cookies.
5. Analytics
We use analytics services, including Google Analytics and the analytics tools of our ad partner Ezoic, to count visits and understand which pages are popular. These services use cookies and may receive your IP address and device information. You can opt out of Google Analytics with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
6. Advertising
The Site is free to read because it carries advertising. Ads are provided through Ezoic, which works with Google AdSense and other advertising partners. These partners may use cookies, device identifiers and your IP address to show ads, limit how often you see them, measure results and, where permitted, personalise ads based on your interests.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies lets it and its partners serve ads based on your visits to this and other sites. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
- Manage Google ad personalisation at adssettings.google.com.
- Ezoic’s own privacy practices are described in Ezoic’s Privacy Policy.
- You can also opt out of many interest-based ads at optout.aboutads.info or, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu.
We also show clearly labelled Sponsored placements. Sponsors do not receive your personal information from us. If you click a sponsor’s link, that sponsor’s own privacy policy applies.
7. Push notifications
We use OneSignal to send push notifications. If you allow them, OneSignal stores a browser or device identifier and basic details such as your browser type and country so it can deliver alerts. You can stop notifications at any time in your browser or phone settings (look for notification permissions for ghanaijabuzz.com).
8. Other services we use
- YouTube. Our videos are embedded from YouTube. We load them only when you press play, using YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode. Once a video plays, YouTube may set cookies and collect data under Google’s Privacy Policy.
- Live scores. Our football scores and tables are provided by a third-party widget (ProScores / livescores.pro) that loads in your browser, so its provider may receive your IP address and device details.
- Fonts. We load fonts from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address when the fonts are fetched.
- Hosting and security. The Site is hosted by Hostinger and uses caching and security tools that process visitor requests.
- Spam protection. Comments may be checked by spam-filtering tools.
9. Support payments
If you support GhaNaijaBuzz through the Support Us page, your payment is handled by an independent provider (such as Kora Pay, Paystack or Ko-fi). You enter your payment details on their site, not ours. We do not see or store your card or bank details. We may receive a confirmation of the payment, with your name or email if you provide it. Each provider’s own privacy policy applies to your payment.
10. Who we share information with
We do not sell your personal information for money. We share information only with:
- the service providers named in this policy, who process it to provide their services to us;
- advertising partners, as described in section 6;
- authorities or other parties where the law requires it, or to protect our rights, our readers or the public; and
- a successor, if the Site or our business is sold or reorganised.
11. How long we keep information
We keep information only as long as needed for the purposes above. Comments stay on the story unless you ask us to remove them. Messages are kept as long as needed to deal with your request. Analytics and advertising data are kept for the periods set by those providers.
12. International transfers
We operate from Nigeria, our readers are in Ghana, Nigeria and elsewhere, and our service providers may process data in other countries, including the United States and Europe. Where we send data abroad we rely on the safeguards the law allows, such as the providers’ standard contractual terms.
13. Your rights
Depending on where you live, including under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, the Ghana Data Protection Act 2012 (Act 843) and, for visitors from Europe and the UK, the GDPR / UK GDPR, you may have the right to:
- ask what personal information we hold about you and get a copy;
- ask us to correct or delete it;
- object to or restrict certain uses, including direct marketing;
- withdraw consent at any time (this does not affect what we did before); and
- complain to your data protection authority: the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, the Ghana Data Protection Commission, or the authority in your country.
To use any of these rights, email info@ghanaijabuzz.com. We may need to confirm who you are first.
14. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect information, including secure (HTTPS) connections. No website can be completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
15. Children
The Site is a general news site and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email us and we will delete it.
16. Links to other sites
Our stories and pages link to other websites. We are not responsible for their content or privacy practices, so please read their policies.
17. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top shows when it last changed. If we make important changes, we will say so on the Site.
