OPay microfinance blows hot after social media users claimed bank was shutting down

The company further accused Garba of promoting an alternative digital wallet, Crowwe Wallet, alongside the alleged false claims about OPay.

OPay Digital Services Limited has threatened legal action against social media commentator Adam B. Garba II and TikTok account ViralGrabTV over publications alleging that the fintech company was planning to embark on a “long indefinite break.”

In separate demand letters dated September 1, 2026, OPay accused Garba, who operates the X account @adamugarba, and ViralGrabTV, which operates the TikTok account @viralgrabtvng, of publishing false, malicious, libellous and defamatory information capable of damaging the company’s reputation and business interests.

The company said it was notified on August 30, 2026, of a publication by Garba in which he allegedly informed members of the public that OPay would be going on a “long indefinite break” and advised customers to withdraw funds from their accounts with the digital payments company.

OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, said the publication was made with the alleged intention of bringing the company into disrepute.

The company further accused Garba of promoting an alternative digital wallet, Crowwe Wallet, alongside the alleged false claims about OPay.

“It is our position that your conduct is malicious, deliberate and calculated to damage our company’s goodwill, reputation and commercial interest,” the letter to Garba stated.

“Your publication and/or amplification of the false statement, coupled with the simultaneous recommendation of an alternative wallet alongside the false publication, constitutes an infringement to our company’s right and have caused reputational and commercial damage to our brand and business operations.”

OPay demanded that Garba permanently delete the publication from his X account and any other platform, retract the claims and issue an “unreserved apology” to the company.

The fintech firm gave Garba until 11:59pm WAT on September 1, 2026, to comply with the demands.

OPay warned that failure to comply could trigger legal proceedings.

“TAKE NOTICE that your action has caused irreparable damage to us and we shall take all appropriate legal action against you and shall pursue all remedies available to us,” the company said.

In a separate letter addressed to ViralGrabTV, OPay said it had also been notified of a TikTok publication made on August 30 alleging that the company would embark on a “long indefinite break” and advising customers to withdraw their funds.

The company described the publication as “false, malicious, unlawful, libellous, defamatory and lacking any factual, legal or ethical basis whatsoever.”

According to OPay, the publication and its amplification had caused reputational and commercial damage to the company and adversely affected its business operations.

The company similarly demanded that ViralGrabTV delete the publication and desist from further disseminating it across TikTok or any other platform.

OPay also demanded a clear and unequivocal retraction as well as an unreserved apology before the same 11:59 pm WAT deadline.

The letters were signed by Rokosu on behalf of OPay Digital Services Limited.

The legal threats come amid heightened sensitivity around information circulated on social media concerning the financial stability and operations of digital financial service providers, where unverified claims can potentially trigger panic among customers.

In another letter dated August 31, 2026, OPay issued similar demands to X user Cute Hafserh (@haifah_er_abba).

The company said it was notified of a publication made on August 30 in which Hafserh allegedly claimed that OPay would be going on a “long indefinite break” and advised customers to remove funds from their accounts.

OPay described the alleged publication as “false, malicious, unlawful, libellous, defamatory and lacking any factual, legal or ethical basis whatsoever.”

“Your publication of the false information constitutes an infringement to our company’s right and have caused reputational and commercial damage to our brand, and harm to our business operations,” the company stated.

OPay demanded that Hafserh delete the publication from X and any other platform, stop further dissemination, retract the claims and issue an unreserved apology.

The company also set 11:59pm WAT as the deadline for compliance and threatened legal action.

“Take notice that your action has caused irreparable damage to us and we shall take all appropriate legal action against you and shall pursue all remedies available to us,” OPay warned.
